In the field of linguistics the DCT has become one of the most significant instruments for analyzing learners' communication behaviors. The key issue in research on pragmatics is: Why do certain learners choose not to accept native-speaker norms? A recent study sought to answer this question using a variety of experimental instruments, including DCTs MQs, DCTs, and RIs. The participants consisted of 46 CLKs, 44 CNSs, and 45 KNSs from five Korean universities. They were asked to complete the DCTs in their first language and complete the MQs in either their L1 or L2. They were then invited to an RI where they were required to reflect and discuss their responses to each DCT scenario.

The results showed that, on average, the CLKs disapproved of native-speaker pragmatic norms in over 40% of their answers. They did this even though they were able to produce patterns that resembled natives. They were also aware of their pragmatism resistance. They attributed their choices to learner-internal factors like their personalities and multilingual identities as well as ongoing life experiences. They also spoke of external factors like relational benefits. However, the interviewees also expressed concern about the social pressures and penalties that they could be subjected to if they strayed from their social norms. Future researchers should consider reassessing the usefulness of these tests in various contexts and in particular situations. This will help them better comprehend how different environments can affect the pragmatic behavior of learners in the classroom and beyond.
